“It’s half past six, it’s p*ssing down and the wind is bending the trees double. Go back to bed!”

“No, it’s good training. What if it’s windy and raining on LEL?”

“Then I’ll have to ride. I don’t have to today. Nobody will know.”

“I will. We’ll just go over this big hill at Bacup, and ride to the start at Hebden Bridge. If it’s still like this, we’ll just ride home. That’ll be 50 miles in the bag”

“You f*cking promised! Why are we riding up Heptonstall Road? It’s a bloody enormous climb. And it’s into the wind!”

“MTFU. We’ll just go to the diner, have some breakfast. Then we cut across to Bacup and back home. If it’s still bad.”

“That bacon butty was lovely. As opposed to that headwind, which was horrendous. Are we going home now?”

“We’ve nearly done the first loop. Might as well finish it. Wind will be behind us now.  Then we can go”

“Can we go now?”

“Not yet. Just the A6033 to climb, then Widdup and back over the A6033, really that’s the second loop done.  Might as well – we’re here, already wet.”

“Right, now can we go?”

“Yes, just 27 miles home, with Clough Foot to climb, directly into a headwind. Nearly done”

“I hate you…”

<sound of quiet sobbing and whirring wheels>
