London Edinburgh London 2013 and KidsCan Charity @KidsCan_UK

Screen Shot 2013-01-05 at 20.38.14Well I’ve done it.  Thankfully (I think!) I entered LEL as soon as entries opened.  The event sold out (about 1000 places I believe) in a little over 12 hours, with many being left disappointed.   For the uninitiated it’s an audax run event that takes the rider over 1400km from London to Edinburgh and back again.  As if that weren’t bad enough, there is a time limit of 116 hours in which to complete the journey, which means pushing nearly 200 miles a day.  It’s one hell of a challenge, and although I’m looking forward to it, I know it will be hugely difficult and so will be training intensively over the next 6 or 7 months.  The route can be seen below

There are a series of controls that provide food and beds, although these are in school halls, and I imagine the combined snoring of 200 or so cyclists might be somewhat disturbing!

In 2010 I rode Lands End to John o’ Groats in aid of The Christie charity.  In 2011 I rode London to Brussels in 24 hours in aid of the British Heart Foundation.  I had a break from any personal charity events in 2012 but I’d decided that if I was successful in entering I’d ride this for charity.

I’d come across KidsCan on their cycling events, and for a small charity been impressed by them immensely.  It’s a great charity doing great work.  There’s some more information below.

So if you feel like sponsoring me there is a link to the right to my sponsorship site, or you can use old-fangled text message donations by texting LELA67 and an amount (e.g. £10) to 70070.

Thanks in advance

1 in 500 children will be diagnosed with cancer in the UK this year.
Tragically, 30% of these children will not survive. Through groundbreaking research, KidsCan is striving to reduce that figure but your continued support is vital.

Who we are

KidsCan Children’s Cancer Research Centre was established in late 2002 to specifically support research into new and improved treatments for children with cancer. Our scientists are looking for treatments which are less damaging to the bodies of children and young adults. They aim to reduce both short and long term side effects whilst retaining the effectiveness of many current treatments.
The work carried out within the KidsCan laboratories covers a range of activities from basic research into new treatments, through to applied research focused on improving the outcome of therapies currently used in the treatment of children with cancer.

Our aims are simple:
• To cure more children with cancer.
• To improve the treatment of children with cancer.
• To develop new treatments for childhood cancer.
• To be a source of information about childhood cancer.

How we are funded

We receive no statutory funding. We rely entirely on contributions from the public, volunteers, businesses and funds generated through KidsCan events for our groundbreaking research to continue.

I can’t wait to read about your LEL experiences. It’d be an amazing event. Also looking forward to reading about your training.
